Of Motherboards and Hard Disks

I have dropped my previous idea of making a desktop that would be controlled via remote desktop. Now that I have taken my desktop to hostel, I decided that it's time that it should have an update.

As I am a storage freak, the first option before me was to do an Hard Disk upgrade. As of now I have 1*80 an 1*500 GB hard disks. The 80 Gb one holds the OS n other installed softwares. The 500 Gb one holds multimedia stuff. It was terrible to see its state. In n 500 GB disks, there is less than 5 Gb worth of space left !!!.

The next option before me was n motherboard update. I have two motherboards - Asus P5G-MX , and original Intel G41 . I have bought the Intel board just 3-4 months back, but I dont like to use it for many reasons. First the board has a poor layout. Second there is no heatsink over the southbridge. As I keep my system running 24*7, its not a good idea not to have n heatsink over the southbridge. On the other hand my Asus board which is based on 945 chipset has n good layout and also features a heatsink over its southbridge. The only drawback of this board is the availabilty of only 2 SATA ports.

So I decided to sell the Intel board. The board is only 4 months old, so I m gettin a fair bargain on the board (abt 2.2k). Next I did an extensive research on the motherboard's available in the market. I found that most low-end boards have intel G-31 or the G-41 chipset. Now the G-31 an G-41 have terrible reviews over th net. The boards that had p-43 or P-45 chipsets still costed well over 5K. So I have decided to stick to my old Asus board an will upgrade when it dies completly or I need more than 2 SATA ports.

Now comming back to Hard disks, My experience with seagate has been good, but my 500 GB disk has some issues. There are many re-allocated sectors in it and considering that the disk is only 5 months old, it's not a good thing at all. The disk is also of the in-famous 7200.11 series which has serious BIOS issues. All these points made me skeptical about investing in seagate again. I had aleardy decided to invest in an 1 TB disk as the cost per Gb is very less ( Less than 1.5 or 2 TB disks). I looked in the local market and very soon got the idea that the guys over stock very less 1 TB disks as the demand around is of 320 GB max. Those did have 1 Tb disks had of Seagate make and Western Digital Disks were rare to found even in 320 GB models. So I deicded to opt for an Seagate 1TB disk which is of 7200.12 model. The series has excellent reviews over the net. So I got an 1Tb disk with the SATA and power cable all for 4.5 K (that's Rs 4.5 per GB !!!)

Now I an transferring data from my 500 GB disk to the 1Tb one and I seriously hope that the 1 Tb disk lasts atleast for more six months.

PS- A new issue has cropped up. My UPS has died and is giving 0 backup. I think that it;s time to buy an battery for it, considering the fact the old one has lasted well over 5 years.

Stats Update

Got stuck here as I couldn go 2 darjeeling due to medical emergency of ma grandpa :( .

I am kiiline time by doin almost all sorts of things regerdin computer. First of all opend up ma lappy to cleam it up (F*uck d warranty). Believe me puttin back a lappy all in 1 piece can really be a pain in d a**.

Second I hav decided to learn dreamweaver. Got to learn it basics n hoped tht I learn it well . I also made a small site for myself and hosted it up on 110mb.com (Kudos to free hosting :) ). If u ever want to visit d sit just point ur browser to shivambose.110mb.com .

As I have decided to restart my DC++ hub frm d next academic session, I hav decided to configure a new rig for myself. Most of the components will be second hand ofcourse. As of now I hav the following spare components at my disposal -

1. An ASUS motherboard.

2. A 500 gig hardisk

3. DVD writer

I hav figured tht I need the following components to make a full fleged PC

1. A Processor

2. RAM

3. Smps

I wont require a monitor as I m thinkin of controllin it via remote desktop :) . And I will require a network switch to split ma LAN Port @ my room. All together I hav n budget of arnd 5K. let's c what happens nxt. Will definitely keep u updated.

As of now I m feelin sleepy n goin 2 sleep.

"Bowled The Beautiful - Love story of a cricketer" a Review

This book by Subhasis Das is awesome. The author is a student at MIT (MAHARASHTRA INSTITUE OF TECHNOLOGY) and in this book of his he tells the readers about n non.typical love story which has a double tale.
The sory revolves around a guy name "CHRISH". It so happens tht Chrish has everything in his lifr, whatever he has desired - a dream cricket carrer, money, fame and a hot girlfriend "Nikita". But it still makes him to think if that'a all he wanted.
He had a great college life at MIT. though there were evnts which still haunt him, he tries his best to overcome his past. However Nikita turns out to be smarter than he thinks. She finds out about his past life and confronts him about the events at MIT. In order to save their relantionship Chrish makes up his mind to tell Nikita about everythin about his life at MIT - The Samaj (Gujjus), the hot girls (Ashleys), the gang named five stars, the mission imposible and the most important of them all "Tanushree-the beautifull".
The book correctly protrays one's college life and is worth reading.

Robotics again

I have started doing robotics. We hav a robotics season ahead of us in thr form of many techfests and other competitions. I have formed a team comprising of 3 members: myself, Avinash and Avhisek. We still are due to sit for a meeting ( Owing due to some circunstances beyound our reach) and I seriously think that we will sit for a one today.

Well we are mainly concentrating on the following competitions in front of us:-

1. Exordium ( NIT, Rourkela) 7 -9th november.

2. Khitij (IIT, Khargpur) 28-31st January.

3. Techfest (IIT,Bombay)

4. Confluence (NIT, Rourkela) 1st week of february.

The team has been named TEAM " MEGATRON", owing that the name was used by my seniors nd mentor Subanshu and rashmi bro. Well Ireally think that I will be succesfull in continuing the leagcy that they started 3 yrs ago. Team "MEGATRON" is looking forward to win prizes in atleast 2 out of the 4 of the events mentioned above.

Wifi in hostel...

I have absolutely forgot to tell u guys in my last post that my hostel has got a new wifi network in addition to the wired network. I think that will solve a lost of disagreements on the topic of "LAN wire sharing" between the roomies.

Back with a BANG

Well th last time I blogged,I was satying in ma home. Now that the new session has started I haved moved to hostel. My hostel "Homi Bhaba Hall of residence", or more fondly "Hall 7" by nitians is one the best and new hostel in NIT RKL ( if u neglect the problems of insects though). Well I dont want 2 go into the problems of the hostel now.

Well the thing that most fasinated me was the file sharing network of the hostel. As it always had been, DC++ has been the favourite in the hostels of our insti. During the initial few days of the sessions only one of the hub named "SITA's hub" was funtional. kudos to a final year senior of ours to run the hub. Then came the evergreen hub of hall 7 named "ToXIn". After that 2 or 3 more hubs were stared. The file sharing is on it's full pace in our hostel.

I don't know what happened to me, that I thought of starting of my own hub. Well I had brought my evergreen desktop to hostel, and started a hub named "ZeRoCoOL's HUB" which runs on ip 192.168.194.4. The pic of my "integrated desktop" is attached here :P . Now I am facing network problem in my room and that my hub has a frequent downtime problems :( .

Pathetic condition of internet in NITR

Guys In this Post of mine I would like to tell u abt the pathetic condition of the internet available to the students.
Basically our Institute has a 16Mbps connection. The network is been managed by a private agency(Probably WIPRO). The network mainly (read totally) consists of wired Ethernet type. all the rooms in the hostel are provided with lan ports. The lan connection is good, infarct great if u want a strong DC++ or for gaming purposes. But the net connection terribly sucks. We hav got this management system known a CYBERROAM. so all the social networking websites, p2p application, youtube n all is blocked. so u might b thinking that the overall speed might be good. But don't remain in any illusion. On peak time u get download speed from .4 to 4 kbps n browsing speed also sucks a big time. the speed is different for different groups of students (BTECH, MTECH n others).
So now the point is what the hell is the institute management is doing withe 16Mbps connection. It can approximately cost 6-7 lakhs per month to have a 16 Mbps connection. So basically the management is wasting the government's money by deploying low grade admins who think themselves as god.
Once I went to complain about the low speed of the internet to the admins (Ya we have 4-5 morons). They told me that the net is mainly for the faculty n for official purposes n not for the students!!!!

so now i have some questions to ask
1. Which faculty members need a speed of 2-3 Mbps??
2. What on earth do they do with it ??
3. Why r the authorities not able to give a logical answer to our queries ??
4. Why the institute is wasting the tax payers money ??
5. Is the institute reselling the bandwidth for its own profit ??
6. Is there some illegal activities going on on the part of the admin (Like downloading smut) ??

A new Start

Well first of all i would like to say HELLO to all the netizens of the blogoshpere . I was almost pages away everytime I thought of writing a blog (One of my friend even claimed that he was inches away).
But there is always a first time and I am here at last. Well the main topic of my blog would be technology related stuff and also some robotics stuff (I m n avid robotics enthusiast). My blogs can also have postings of other blog's, but that would be clearly mentioned and the link to the original blog will be provided. Do post ur comments as they are precious to me
